XS Games announced the early spring 2010 release of The Red Star for iPhone and PSPGo. The game was previously released on the Sony PlayStation 2 video game console and met with widespread acclaim. The Red Star combines top-down shooters and beat 'em up gameplay, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Christian Gossett.
Chief Executive Officer of XS Games, Steve Grossman, said that The Red Star is a proudly old school combination of classic action genres, much in the spirit of Contra and Streets of Rage. He also explained that the PSPGo and iPhone are perfect platforms for the game in terms of controls, visuals and price.
The Red Star brings to life a mystical and technologically advanced alternate reality resembling Soviet Russia, the dystopian United Republics of the Red Star (URRS). The world has been wracked by a vicious conflict between the world's powerful nations in this alternate reality.
Players can choose to take the perspective of one of the graphic novel's three most prominent characters, which are Maya Antares, Kyuzo, and Makita. Maya Antares is a powerful sorceress in search of her husband who was lost in battle. Kyuzo is Maya's personal bodyguard as well as a powerful fighter. Makita is a quick and agile warrior forced to abandon her life as a world-class athlete when her homeland was invaded.
The iPhone and PSPGo versions of The Red Star offer fresh visual polish and improved control n comparison to the Sony PlayStation 2 version. The Red Star is the perfect pick-up-and-play action game for when on the go.
